The Steelworkers – Wood Council health and safety directors have developed a number of initiatives aimed ultimately at the reduction of the death and injury rate of our members. These include:
- Developing a H&S Program manual clearly outlining the best practices of health and safety representatives at all levels;
- Training health and safety trainers;
- Building up a library of health and safety training materials;
- Developing better lines of communication sharing; and
- Raising public awareness into the hazards of our industries and providing health and safety education into our school system.
The importance of health and safety, particularly but not only in the forest sector, is recognized and was preserved in the IWA -- Steelworkers merger in 2004. Indeed, both unions have been at the forefront of improving worker health and safety for working people in Canada. The Wood Council will work in conjunction with the Canadian National Office, Districts and Local Unions to achieve the above objectives and continue to improve the health and safety of our membership on a daily basis.
The Steelworkers -- Wood Council is committed to ensuring all of our workplaces are healthy and safe. It is our obligation to continually remind all our members and workers throughout the country that workplace injuries and illness can be eliminated when both workers and employers live up to their collective responsibilities. We have a responsibility to one another to ensure health and safety is a number one priority and together we can continue to build a healthy and safe union.
