Dear Sisters and Brothers,

As we begin the New Year it’s a great opportunity to reflect on our struggles in 2008 and to focus our attention on the upcoming year.  Our Union continues to lead the labour movement in Ontario and the Atlantic Provinces; fighting on behalf of our members and our retirees.  I am always the proud Director of District 6 but the past year has been exceptional for our Union.  We have changed the pension legislation in Nova Scotia to protect our members and all workers, we have pushed the Newfoundland and Labrador government to introduce a registry to reevaluate workers compensation for our former members at Baie Verte and our members have occupied numerous plants in Ontario to demand justice for them and their families.

In 2009 we will continue to focus our efforts to protect our members in the manufacturing and forestry sectors and will initiate further actions in our “Jobs Worth Fighting For” campaign.  At the same time we will be at bargaining tables across the District working together to get good solid collective agreements for our members.  In 2009, as always, I look forward to working to advance the rights of working people.

Whether we are at the bargaining table, occupying a plant, in the legislature, at the courthouse or in the streets, Steelworkers are at the forefront of the fight and we make a difference in the lives of all working people.

In solidarity,

Wayne Fraser
