Steve Hunt, District 3 Director

Stephen Hunt was elected as Western and Northern Canada (District 3) Director on October 27, 2005. Steve had previously held that position since April 2004 when he was appointed to replace Ken Neumann who became the Steelworkers’ National Director for Canada.

Assistant to the District 3 Director since 2002, Steve has been involved in provincial and territorial activities for more than three decades. A proud miner and union member all his working life, Steve started as a member of the local union representing the workers at Utah Mines in Port Hardy, British Columbia in 1973. He moved on to work at Afton Mines in Kamloops, BC before being appointed a Steelworker’s staff representative in 1984.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Steve worked tirelessly to represent Steelworkers in the BC Interior. In 1995 he added the responsibility of being the District 3 education and health, safety and environment coordinator to his duties.

Steve has always been a passionate advocate for worker health and safety. Today, he sits as the only worker representative on the British Columbia Workers Compensation Board’s Board of Directors. Over the years, as a Steelworker Humanity Fund director and a health and safety specialist, Steve has traveled to Peru and Chile to assist miners to develop strategies to prevent silicosis and promote mine safety.

Steve has earned a reputation as a health and safety expert and was called on to provide expert testimony into the Westray Mine explosion. His evidence, advocacy and expertise were relied on in the Steelworkers’ campaign to have the Criminal Code of Canada amended to provide for criminal prosecution of corporate directors and officers for workplace deaths. He has also served on numerous national and international bodies examining and advancing workplace safety and health.

Steve has worked hard to ensure the success of the IWA (Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers of Canada) merger, including leading a major campaign to stop the horrific level of death and serious injury in the BC forest sector. The IWA merger, along with an aggressive District 3 organizing program, has seen Steelworkers’ membership in the largest geographic district grow to over 55,000 members.
