YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO BE A STEELWORKER
Did you know you have the legal right to join a union? This basic right is protected by provincial and federal laws.
As a Steelworker member you can build a better future. You and your fellow workers can join our organization to fight for and maintain better wages, benefits and working conditions. Most importantly the Steelworkers bring strength and unity to the workplace and will protect your fundamental right to treated with respect and dignity.
Through solidarity in the workplace and strength during collective bargaining. The Steelworkers also provide equal opportunties to all of our members and grievance procedures which guarantee those rights.
We work to build positive, constructive and cooperative relationships with employers. But we also provide our members an opportunity to counter unjust actions by employers when necessary.
As a member of our union, you can plan your life better, knowing your job and position are protected by the security of a Steelworkers contract. Having a collective agreement means your employer has to deal with our union and can not pressure individual employees to accept things they don't want.
Our experienced negotiators, have a reputation of fighting for issues, including fair wages, hours of work, basic benefits (medical, dental, wage indemnity, vision care, pharmacare, etc.) and a seniority system that includes protections on recall from layoffs, transfers and promotions, job classifications, job postings, full statutory holidays and vacations and overtime conditions and rates of pay.
The Steelworkers also work to ensure that your rights to equality are protected. This means freedom from discrimmination based on gender, race, colour, religioin, place of origin, physical or mental disabilities and sexual orientation. Our union works to educate employers and members on these important human rights issues.
Most importantly, the Steelworkers fight to protect your right to return from work each day in a safe and healthy manner. Experience tells us that, in many workplaces, basic health and safety standards are not enforced, either by employers, governments or government inspectors.
The Steelworkers can be in your workplace to ensure that your basic rights are met. You have a right to know about dangerous work about hazardous work conditions. You also have a right to participate in processes to reduce workplace hazards and refuse unsafe work without fear of discipline from the employer.
Contact our union today to find out how you and your fellow workers can join the Steelworkers District 3.
