WHAT:   News conference by United Steelworkers and Migrante Ontario

WHERE: Holiday Inn, corner of Dixon and Martin Grove, Toronto

WHEN: 11 a.m., Tuesday June 10

TORONTO -- A news conference by the United Steelworkers (USW) and Migrante Ontario on Tuesday (June 10) at 11 a.m. will launch the Independent Workers Association-Home Worker Section.

The event will be held in the Etobicoke Room at the Holiday Inn on the corner of Martin Grove and Dixon.

The first initiative of its kind, the association is intended to offer representation to caregivers who are in Canada under the Live-In Caregivers Program, as well as those who are independent home workers and permanent residents.

Live-in caregivers are currently at the mercy of agencies both in their country of origin and here in Canada. The majority of these home workers are from the Philippines.

The USW is committed to finding ways to defend the interests of marginalized workers who do not have traditional bargaining relationships with employers. Mostly from new Canadian communities, these workers deserve to have their rights protected.

The news conference will introduce ways that the USW and Migrante can provide services and protection to these workers.

Migrante-Ontario is a chapter of Migrante International, a global alliance of more than 100 overseas Filipino organizations in 22 countries. Migrante’s mission is to uphold and defend the rights and welfare of Filipino migrants and their families.

Canada’s most diverse union, the USW represents more than 280,000 men and women working in every sector of Canada’s economy.
