The tentative agreement we are presenting to you for consideration is the result of difficult negotiations with the University of Toronto and a direct reflection of the support and solidarity of the membership since day one.
We began this process with a survey of members’ priorities. That became your first message to the committee and, therefore, the university. You were clear about five priority areas: wages, benefits, pensions, job security and job evaluation.
From there, your committee prepared for the challenge and bargaining with the university began in earnest in June. Finally, just hours before the strike deadline of midnight, Sept. 7, the university again got the message and we got a settlement.
This highlights package provides a report back to you on how your priorities were met. If accepted by you, this agreement represents a precedent in several areas, most notably in a child care benefit that will subsidize child care costs for children under the age of 7. It is a benefit that commences in 2009. At the same time, improvements have been made to hearing aid coverage, physiotherapy and chiropractic treatment coverage, and a brand new provision for orthodontic coverage.
