Do the Right Thing!

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

These are very difficult economic times. Unemployment is on the rise. New jobs will be very tough to find. Tens of thousands of laid-off workers and their families are at risk of losing everything.

Your union is calling on the government to do the right thing and improve Employment Insurance benefits so that families can make it through this economic crisis. Out of work shouldn’t mean out of hope.

Governments will give billions to the companies who are letting people go. It’s only fair that they also help the laid-off workers and their families who are the real victims. $54.1 billion of your EI contributions have been siphoned out of the EI fund over the years and used for other purposes. Now is the time to pay that money back and put it to work.

The Steelworkers are going to fight for meaningful changes to Employment Insurance (EI) benefits and you can help. The more support we can gather and the more we make ourselves heard, the faster the government will make the changes families need.

Here’s what you can do right now –

  1. Read this bulletin so you can tell others about this serious problem and your union’s solution… spread the word.
  2. Email us at dotherightthing@usw.ca so we can keep you up to date. If you want to volunteer to help in this campaign, simply put “I can help” in your email.
  3. Visit www.expandei.com

Keeping families afloat is just as important as keeping companies afloat. I will be in touch with you again shortly with more information about what your union is doing to help laid-off workers and their families, and how you can help.

In Solidarity,

Wayne Fraser
