Invest in Canada, our people and our infrastructure

The United Steelworkers supports measures that create jobs and protect pensions. While the crisis worldwide deepens and steel capacity is idled, governments are not doing enough to protect those who suffer job loss or to help turn the economy around.

This is not business as usual for our country or our economy.

Despite the obvious crisis in manufacturing, our federal government failed to deliver a meaningful stimulus package, ignored our demands for a ‘buy Canada’ provision, and provided inadequate improvements to Employment Insurance.

It’s time to bring new ideas to Ottawa and re-tool our economy so that it works for all of us.

New Democrats want to hear from you about the effects of the economic crisis. The NDP has launched two task forces that will listen to and consult with Canadians across the country from now until May. Watch for more details in your community!

Take action

Let’s raise our voices and challenge government to deal with the crisis workers are facing. Join us at labour rallies across the country: London (May 2); Oshawa (May 9); and Toronto  (June 13).

The continued loss of manufacturing jobs hurts all of us. Let’s keep up the fight for what we really need – more training and investment in good jobs.

May 12 is our chance to change B.C.

There will be a general election in British Columbia on May 12, 2009. Our Steelworkers Vote Campaign is already active, with hundreds of volunteers working hard to elect more New Democrats.

Carole James and the New Democrats have a plan to build a province that makes life better and more affordable for you:

  • Reduce log exports and re-build our devastated forest industry
  • Support private sector job creation through skills training, more research and development and small business support
  • Invest now to create jobs and improve BC’s hospitals, schools, roads, transit and community infrastructure
  • Make skills training and post-secondary education affordable for families
  • Reduce hospital wait times by training and hiring more doctors and nurses
  • Expand affordable long term care and set higher standards for seniors’ care
  • Stop the privatization of hospitals and other public services
  • Stop the sale of our rivers and the privatization of BC Hydro
  • Scrap the unfair and ineffective gas tax and take on big polluters with new standards, and new green technology
