About 20 members of United Steelworkers Local 6500 lit fire barrels, hoisted picket signs and waved Canadian flags just before midnight Sunday, minutes before their contract with Vale Inco expired and they began striking against their employer.
Local president John Fera joined the picket team at the Copper Cliff Smelter Complex, where he gave Steelworkers a pep talk, cautioned them about picket line protocol and explained when their strike pay and temporary benefits would kick in.
