TORONTO, July 28 - Patrick Hinchey, a union activist and committed member of the community, died Monday night as a result of a car accident while he was on vacation.
Pat was an integral part of his United Steelworker local 5795 for over 30 years. He held the position of Recording Secretary for the past 24 years. "Pat was an amazing guy. He had a great sense of humour, and was someone everybody felt close to," said Wayne Fraser, United Steelworkers District 6 Director.
"Pat took a special interest in the health and safety of his fellow workers. He was both a full-time health and safety activist and instructor. For many years, he was an important member of the National Health and Safety Committee. We will really miss him," said George Kean, President of USW local 5795.
In addition to his union involvement, he was active in many community organizations and a reliable volunteer for the New Democratic Party in every election since the early 70's.
"Pat will be deeply missed by his family, friends and his sisters and brothers in the labour movement," said Fraser.
Pat is survived by his wife Dianne, son Patrick and daughter Glendine. Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.
