Urgent Funding Appeal – Haiti Earthquake
To: USW Unit Chairs, Local Union Presidents, Staff and Members:
One week after it happened it is still not clear how many lives were lost in the January 12, 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti. What is clear is the very great need there continues to be for emergency assistance for the people of Haiti.
Beyond the immediate assistance of water, shelter, and medical attention, there is the need to provide resources for rebuilding and re-construction. The goal of reconstruction must not be limited to restoring the status quo. Rather it is our hope that reconstruction efforts engage the Haitian people themselves, and will result in a more equal, inclusive, and democratic society in Haiti. The common people need to benefit, and ways need to be found to support viable sources of income and livelihood.
In order to support emergency relief the Steelworkers Humanity Fund has contributed $25,000 toward the Humanitarian Coalition.
I am urging all Steelworker bargaining units, locals unions, staff, and members to consider making an additional donation for Haiti to the Steelworkers Humanity Fund. The SHF will forward the contribution to the partners of the Humanitarian Coalition (Oxfam Quebec, Oxfam Canada, Care, and Save the Children) who have the necessary organization and staff in place to ensure aid arrives in Haiti.
Please send contributions payable to the “Steelworkers Humanity Fund” to Steelworkers Humanity Fund, Suite 800, 234 Eglinton Avenue East, Toronto, ON, M4P 1K7. Please indicate that the contribution is for “Haiti”.
Contributions from individuals donated specifically for Haiti relief before February 12 is eligible for matching from the Canadian Government.
Individual members who would like to help can donate via the Humanity Coalition.
Fraternally,
Ken Neumann
National Director for Canada
