NDP Ideas and Energy Helped by Steelworker Involvement
The USW will play a key role in helping British Columbia’s New Democratic Party rebuild and achieve its main objective – booting the provincial Liberals from office in 2013.
The pledge was delivered by more than 20 Steelworkers who attended the BC NDP Convention in December as affiliate delegates and members of constituency associations. Steelworkers were active on the main stage, in executive elections and on the convention floor.
“It was important for us to be at this convention and show the NDP we are ready and willing to help do the work to make the party stronger – at the central level and at the constituency level,” says District 3 Director Stephen Hunt.
Scott Lunny, District 3 Assistant to the Director, was elected as one of six party vice-presidents, on a slate headed by new NDP President Moe Sihota, well-known former NDP cabinet minister.
The new executive can work closely with the caucus and labour movement to build the NDP in the run-up to the next election, Lunny says.
“We are getting on with the job that was set out by this year’s convention themes,” says Lunny. “Our task is clear: the NDP election campaign and platform need to inspire party supporters and win over the general public.
“Our immediate work is equally clear: building the party in all regions of the province and developing a new capacity to deliver our values and message to a growing number of NDP activists and the public.”
