“Our workplace and local union have been Steelworkers for over 50 years and generations of families have come through our doors,” said USW Local 8328 President John Manfre, a 44-year member of the local at Welded Tube of Canada in Concord, Ont.
Today, there are 365 members of USW Local 8328 at the workplace that was organized by the union in the early 1970s.
Steelworkers members at Welded Tube make steel tubular products used as structural elements in buildings, mechanical tubing, energy tubulars and more.
The steel used in these products is largely sourced from other USW-represented workplaces: Algoma Steel and Stelco, where members of USW locals 2251, 2724, 1005 and 8782 work.
Welded Tube of Canada end products serve customers and companies across North America.
“When the wages, benefits and pensions are good and when people feel safe at work, they stay and they bring others along for the opportunity,” said Manfre.
At a workplace visit, District 6 Director Myles Sullivan and Assistant to the District 6 Director Kevon Stewart met members working throughout the Rayette and Mechanical mills.
“The years people dedicate their working lives here speaks to the strength of the collective agreements that the union has been able to bargain on behalf of USW members,” said Sullivan.
