USW Local 7656 bargaining update with Mosaic’s Colonsay mine

November 20, 2022 | Media Releases

Since February of this year, USW Local 7656’s bargaining team have been meeting with Mosaic to reach a new collective agreement that expired April 30, 2021. Unfortunately, after months in the collective bargaining process, it has come to an impasse.

USW Local 7656 has noted that the wages offered by Mosaic are not competitive and do not reflect the profit margins that Mosaic and many other potash mining companies are making around the world. The mine is located just outside of Saskatoon, with approximately 235 members represented by USW.

“We are disappointed at the company’s insistence on offering the status quo to our members, especially at a time when the costs of living have skyrocketed,” said USW Area Coordinator for Saskatchewan and Alberta, Darrin Kruger.

The local union has written to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Board to inform them of impasse and request a mediator.

Mosaic and other companies in the potash industry have been making record profits in recent quarters. The success of the company is largely due to the dedication and hard work of USW members, who deserve more than what Mosaic is offering.

“It’s time that Mosaic recognizes the work of our members and offers them their fair share of the profit pie,” said Scott Lunny, USW District 3 Director (Western provinces and the Territories).
