Steelworkers Reach Tentative Deal with Victoria University

TORONTO - The United Steelworkers (USW) and Victoria University have reached a tentative agreement on a new, three-year contract for administrative, technical, housekeeping, food services and maintenance employees.

This tentative deal includes several improvements to the existing collective agreement and a new, innovative approach to ensure long-term sustainability of our members' pension plan," said John Ankenman, USW Local 1998 bargaining unit chair. The union represents 145 employees at Victoria University, a college of the University of Toronto.

Details of the deal will not be released until union members review the agreement and hold a ratification vote on Thursday, Ankenman said.

In the last month the USW has negotiated agreements on pension plan reform for several thousands employees at Victoria University, the University of Toronto and the University of Guelph.

"Retirement security is a genuine concern for our members. We are negotiating agreements that address this issue and establish a process to strengthen and protect our members' pension plans," said USW Ontario Director Marty Warren.
