United Steelworkers endorse Amber Hockin and Aaron Ekman for leadership of BC Federation of Labour

Burnaby, BC—The United Steelworkers are proud to announce their support for Amber Hockin and Aaron Ekman for the leadership of the BC Federation of Labour, says Stephen Hunt, USW Director for Western Canada.

“Amber has a demonstrated ability to unite the labour movement in common cause,” says Hunt.  “She has built one of Canada’s most successful labour education programs ensuring thousands of BC unions activists have the skills to succeed. Aaron’s experience building capacity and opening doors for young workers in our movement is essential to ensure the labour movement has a next generation ready to lead.”

“Over and over again, it’s been proven that a union card is the best way to address income inequality. Amber and Aaron’s commitment to growing union ranks is a welcome and needed focus in our province,” Hunt said.

Hunt noted that most of the United Steelworkers membership is based outside of Metro Vancouver.  “It’s important to us that the leadership of the Federation has a strong understanding of every part of our province and the diverse makeup of union members.  Amber’s experience leading private sector airline workers and Aaron’s representation of public sector workers in BC’s north are a winning combination.”

The BC Federation of Labour convention will be held November 24-28 in Vancouver. Voting day is November 27. For more information on Hockin’s and Ekman’s campaign, visit www.amberhockin.ca
