Gerard Urges Union Leaders to Hit the Streets to Boot Conservatives from Office

The leader of the largest industrial labour union in North America called on its members to work together to boot the Conservative government out of office in the upcoming election.

Leo W. Gerard, president of the United Steelworkers, told delegates at the USW District 6 conference in Sault Ste. Marie Wednesday to mobilize to elect an NDP government to Parliament.

With its headquarters in Pittsburgh, the United Steelworkers has more than 800,000 members across Canada, the United States, and the Carribean.

Gerard, originally from Sudbury, blasted Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s decision to call an 11-week long election, arguing the move was purely a tactic to outspend his opposition.

“He figures if he calls the election now, he can outspend the other parties and use that to recapture the prime ministership. We won't be able to raise as much money as they've got, but we've got something they don't have. That's hundreds of thousands of members, not just in our union, but in all unions,” he said.
