Steelworkers Humanity Fund Supports the Sudbury Food Bank

(SUDBURY, ON) – The United Steelworkers presented donations this past Monday to the Banque d’aliments Sudbury Food Bank (BDSFB), the Elgin St. Mission, and the Blue Door Soup Kitchen totaling $6000.

Myles Sullivan, the North-East Ontario Area Coordinator of the USW, presented the donations on behalf of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund.

“We’re always happy to be able to help out and do whatever we can for the community,” said Mr. Sullivan, who also explained how the USW’s Humanity Fund works.

Every member of the Union contributes one cent per hour worked to the fund. That might not seem like a lot, but with 280,000 members in Canada, the contributions add up: The Humanity fund has given $166,000 to local Food Banks across Canada this year.

According to Dan Xilon, executive director of the BDSFB, the Steelworkers are an important partner for the Food Bank:

“This donation from the Humanity Fund is a wonderful thing, and it certainly helps every year, but I have to say the local Steelworkers have always been great at helping us out. Knowing that support is there and knowing their commitment to the community really helps us in our work.”
