USWCares: Rick Woods Memorial Golf Tournament

Rick Woods Golf TournamentRick Woods was a union activist who suddenly passed away 13 years ago from a heart attack at the age of 50, leaving behind a teenaged daughter, Nicki, who is autistic. His death was tragic for all who knew him. The members of USW Local 5328 wanted to do something to remember him and to provide for his daughter’s educational needs.

Since its first edition in 2003, the Rick Woods Memorial Golf Tournament has grown considerably, thanks to the efforts of a group of union volunteers. As Nicki has grown, the focus of the tournament has changed.

The Hamilton Steelworkers Area Council now partners with Local 5328 in organizing this event. The underlying reason for the Rick Woods Memorial Golf Tournament remains strong: to remember a true hero among us who was taken too early in life.

In Rick’s name he is still able to help his community.

This year, the Hamilton Area Council presented a $10,000 cheque to Hamilton Foodshare as it kicks off its summer campaign. This brings the total donations of the Area Council over the last 12 years to well over $250,000.

Our union believes that we should be helping others and raising the standard of living for everyone. This golf tournament, which has wide-reaching support, is just one of the many ways we work together to make a difference in our communities.
