USW Cares: A Million Thanks, Saskatoon Steelworkers!

Members of USW Local 8914 in Saskatoon, SK are the recent recipients of United Way Centraide Canada’s “Thanks a Million” award for their 2015 campaign. This award was proudly presented by Andrea Howe, Associate Director, Labour Partnerships & Engagement, United Way of Saskatoon and Area at the 2016 Saskatchewan Federation of Labour Convention.

This award is presented to organizations that have helped change many lives by raising $1 million or more for United Way. United Way focuses their time, knowledge and resources in three key areas; helping kids be all that they can be; moving people from poverty to possibility and building strong communities.  United Way also supports many community initiatives including Journey Home, a Housing First Program. Journey Home focuses on providing housing and supports to Saskatoon most vulnerable citizens and those that have been chronically homeless. As of August 2016, Journey Home has helped support over 40 individuals.

In the summer of 2016, United Way launch five Summer Success camps. These two week camps focus on targeted literacy strategies to help students maintain or improve their reading levels, over the summer months. In addition, one of the Summer Success camps was aimed at helping newcomer children develop their English language skills.

United Way of Saskatoon and Area also provides funding to the Prince Albert Community Foundation. This is a thirteen-year partnership, in which United Way of Saskatoon and Area  supports northern workplace campaigns. The donations received from these workplaces then goes back into helping people in and around Prince Albert.

USW Local 8914, in cooperation with the employer, Cameco raised a total of $1.06 million in 2015! This union-management initiative was possible through payroll deductions that were matched dollar for dollar by Cameco.

A joint letter of endorsement was sent out to members to ask for their support.  As well, Phil Morin, President USW 8914 and management reps jointly spoke at the site presentations.
