Labour Day – Our Day to Celebrate, Reflect and Recommit

Sisters and Brothers,

Labour Day is our day – our day to celebrate, reflect and recommit to standing up for our values, our principles and our hopes.

For Steelworkers and all who strive for a better future, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate this Labour Day, regardless of the challenges and setbacks we’ve encountered over the past year.

Steelworkers and our allies in the labour and progressive movements can celebrate the indisputable reality that we make a positive impact on the lives of working people and families throughout our society.

Through our collective action – in our workplaces, our communities, our courts and our legislatures – we continue to lead the way in the struggle for economic, social and environmental justice.

Every day, Steelworkers demonstrate how the labour movement and the contributions of union members remain a vital force in combatting inequality and in supporting strong families, strong communities and a strong economy.

Every day we fight for better working and living standards for all – for workers’ rights to organize, for a liveable minimum wage, for stable jobs for young people, for retirement security for our seniors and decent pensions for all workers. We fight for accessible, quality, public health care and child care for all. We fight for fairness and equality for women, workers with disabilities, racialized, Aboriginal and LGBTQ workers and all equity-seeking groups in our society.

In our communities, Steelworkers are proud to be among the strongest supporters of charitable, arts, recreation, social service and other vital community-building programs.

Labour Day 2016 is our day to celebrate and reflect on the labour movement’s historic achievements that have benefitted us all. It is also our day, in the spirit of solidarity, to recommit to building on our legacy of activism that has been such a force for greater equality and progressive change.

Have a safe and enjoyable Labour Day.

In solidarity,

Marty Warren
USW District 6 Director
