Stand Up for Steel Campaign

Dear Friends in SOAR Canada,

As you are aware the Canadian basic steel industry and the tube and pipe industry are under severe stress, with several companies under the protection of the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA). Many of our USW  members are on layoff and some 20,000 pensioners in Hamilton and area have had their post-retirement health benefits stopped.  All of the above as a direct result of government inaction on dumping of foreign steel and lack of protection for the domestic steel industry.

Attached is a letter in which Director Neumann describes the present situation well and calls upon the Government of Canada to implement an effective Steel Action Plan, modernize its trade laws and support the Trade Remedy Modernization Plan put forward by the  Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA). In addition the union is demanding that the Canadian International Trade Tribunal Act as well as the regulations and rules that govern the CITT, be amended to enable trade unions to fully participate in trade complaints. The Canadian Directors support this action on behalf of our members and retirees.

Here is a link to a petition http://fairtradeforsteel.ca we ask that you sign the petition and share with your contacts and members in SOAR so that we can show solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Hamilton, Sault Ste. Marie, Regina, Calgary and other regions in Canada that are directly affected by this present situation and need our support.

Should you choose to write or lobby your member of parliament be sure to emphasize the importance of the union being able to participate fully in cases before the CITT.

Thank you for your support of this initiative.

Doug Macpherson
National Coordinator SOAR
