USW Cares: Steelworkers Give Back to the Local Community

Soup Kitchen Donation

Sault Ste. Marie is home to hundreds of Steelworkers from USW Local 2724. That’s why members have made it a tradition to give back to the community that has given them so much.

USW Local 2724 has a mandate, through a past motion to donate a certain amount per year to local community charities and organizations, on top of any volunteer hours that members also give. Some beneficiaries have included, but are not limited to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Children’s Wish Foundation, The Soup Kitchen, Welcome Friend Association, Sault Pridefest and many more!

In addition, USW Local 2724 has donated in response to disasters such as the Fort McMurray Fires that happened earlier this year.

Bursary WinnersEvery summer, the local also awards bursaries to children and grandchildren of members and retirees, who are enrolled in post-secondary education.

Finally, every year during the holiday season, separate from the yearly donation motion, USW Local 2724 donates $1,000 each, to six organizations in Sault Ste. Marie: ARCH, Pauline’s Place, Vincent Place, Soup Kitchen Community Centre, Salvation Army and the Sault Star Santa Fund.
