Steelworkers Humanity Fund Contributes $180,000 to 79 Food Banks Across Canada

TORONTO – United Steelworkers (USW) Canadian National Director Ken Neumann today announced the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is contributing $180,000 to 79 food banks and community food centres across Canada.

“The Steelworkers Humanity Fund is proud to contribute to food banks in communities across Canada where our union’s members live and work. The Humanity Fund supports organizations which assist poor and vulnerable members in our communities who rely on these services to make ends meet,” said Neumann.

“The unfortunate reality in our country is that hundreds of thousands of Canadians, one-third of them children, turn to food banks every month. However, food banks can’t address the underlying causes of poverty – that is why Steelworkers continue to call for a national anti-poverty strategy that sees the elimination of poverty as an issue of human rights and supports federal and provincial campaigns on fair minimum wages.”

Founded in 1985, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered charitable organization that focuses primarily on development projects and emergency aid in developing countries, but also supports Canadian communities in crisis. USW members contribute to the fund through clauses negotiated into collective agreements. In some cases employers make matching contributions to the fund.
