Steelworkers Humanity Fund Supports Hurricane Relief in Haiti, Cuba

TORONTO – The Steelworkers Humanity Fund (SHF) is contributing $15,000 to support relief efforts in Haiti and Cuba in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.

“The devastation from this hurricane is felt most strongly by vulnerable families and individuals who cannot afford to lose what little they had,” said Ken Neumann, Steelworkers Humanity Fund President. “Steelworkers are proud to be able to contribute to relief and rebuilding efforts in Haiti and Cuba.”

The Steelworkers Humanity Fund’s contribution will be directed to Oxfam Quebec, which is working directly on relief efforts responding to the Hurricane Matthew devastation.

“Our union has many members of Haitian origin, particularly in the taxi industry,” said Alain Croteau, member of the SHF Board of Directors and the United Steelworkers (USW) Quebec Director. “Their community of origin, their brothers and sisters, have been hit hard. It’s crucial that we support them, through the Steelworkers Humanity Fund, to which thousands of our members contribute on an ongoing basis,” Croteau said.

Founded in 1985, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered charitable organization that focuses primarily on development projects and emergency aid in developing countries, and supports Canadian communities in crisis. United Steelworkers members contribute to the fund through clauses negotiated into collective agreements. In some cases employers make matching contributions.
