USW Cares: Growing Our Communities One Seed at a Time

USW Local 5917 out of Regina, Saskatchewan participated in the Good Works Project for a second year in a row.

The local partnered with United Way Regina and the Regina and District Labour Council for this project. The group grew different types of roots vegetables at a community garden outside of Cornwall Alternative School.

Starting in June, Steelworkers and other volunteers prepared the soil, planted the seeds, watered and fertilized consistently and even eliminated some weeds. Many hands went into caring for the garden to produce a bountiful harvest.

The vegetables that were grown were donated to several community organizations in the area: the Regina Food Bank, the Carmichael Outreach Centre, Canadian Mental Health Association (Regina) and the Souls Harbour Rescue Mission's Kitchen.

Since students from Cornwall Alternative School have returned from summer vacation, some of the recent harvests have also gone to their lunch meal program, promoting a healthy diet for students.
