USW Cares: Steelworkers Step Up for Local Hospital

USW locals donating $25,000 to “The Wave” fundraising campaign

SEPT-ÎLES, Que. – Steelworkers from Quebec’s North Shore have decided to make a generous contribution to “La Vague” (The Wave) a fundraising campaign to bring new equipment to the regional hospital in Sept-Îles.

The Steelworkers’ contributions will go to the hospital’s fundraising arm, the Fondation régionale Hôpital Sept-Îles, as part of a five-year campaign to raise over $4 million to replace aging urology and medical imaging equipment.

Nine Steelworkers’ North Shore locals, along with the union’s head office, will make a total donation of $25,000 to the campaign, in the amount of $5,000 per year until 2020.

“Our donation reflects our commitment to our communities and our recognition that we live in a great region,” said Nicolas Lapierre, Steelworkers Area Coordinator for the North Shore.

“We want to help our local hospital acquire cutting edge equipment and ensure that medical professionals choose to stay in our region. It’s important to us that the public system has access to quality tools and equipment. We’re tired of being outdone by the private sector,” he added.

This donation is being funded by the Steelworkers who work at Rio Tinto Fer et Titane in Havre-Saint-Pierre, ArcelorMittal in Fermont and Port-Cartier, the IOC mining company in Sept-Îles, the Société ferroviaire et portuaire de Pointe-Noire in Sept-Îles, as well as employees of close to 30 companies who are members of Local 7065.
