USW Local 9316’s Canadian Health and Safety Milestone

USW Local 9316 in Newfoundland and Labrador has received the Falkowski/Seguin International Health and Safety Award at the 2016 USW International Health, Safety and Environment Conference.

Local 9316, representing oil refinery workers in Come by Chance, N.L., received the award for achieving a national health and safety milestone: the first union local to have its process safety management code of practice sanctioned by the Newfoundland and Labrador government.

Local 9316 members Glen Nolan, Perry Feltham and Jerome O’Keefe took on leadership roles through discussions and lobbying the provincial government over a number of years regarding this initiative.

This distinction gives workers a right to be involved in planning process changes, developing safe work procedures, training and all other aspects of process safety with respect to keeping oil in the pipes.
