Women of Steel Helping to Empower Young Women to Succeed

USW Local 7913 Women of Steel Kayla Merke and Alecia McLeod were invited to YWCA Brandon’s Power of Being a Girl Conference.

The all-day conference hosts young women in Grade 6-8 and is designed to empower young women. Workshops focus on topics such as “self-esteem, healthy relationships, dating, discrimination, body image, sexual health, bullying and Internet safety, among others.

Our Women of Steel were included in the session called “Girls Can Do Anything Boys Can,” along with a surgeon, a police office and two paramedics.

Participants were able to speak to Kayla and Alecia about their own personal stories of how they got into the industry, their struggles and how they overcame them. They also shared the benefits of belonging to a union and being a Woman of Steel.

The participants showed a keen interest and provided meaningful feedback. As a thank you for participating, USW Local 7913 and USW Local 7184 made prizes available for participant.

The Women of Steel at USW Local 7913, in partnership with YWCA Brandon are looking forward to expanding this program and making it available for high school students.
