USW District 6 Statement for December 6

On December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we remember the women murdered at Montreal’s École Polytechnique, and all women lost to gender-based violence.

I am proud that our union continues to take action to end violence against Women and Girls around the world – through the USW District 6 Women of Steel having strong voices and advocating for change. Either on the shop floor or right up to legislation, these Sisters and allies have given hope to all and leaped into action.

I encourage local unions to continue creating systems of women’s advocacy and equity advocates for change. These trained USW member advocates will provide support to women and children experiencing domestic violence or sexual based violence and harassment.

We are proud of the Domestic Leave language that has been successfully introduced and negotiated into District 6 collective agreements over the past three years.

As 2020 comes to an end, take comfort that our union has stepped up to create advocacy systems, and more Women of Steel than ever have taken part in USW training for a better future. They have opened up communication and maintained healthy relationships within our communities.

And our union is participating in an all new gender-specific Health and Safety program. We are helping to create tools and policies so that representatives can support members experiencing domestic violence and/or gender-based violence. When workers are supported, not disciplined or stigmatized, they maintain economic security and greater physical safety.

We shall all remain a united front.

In solidarity,

Marty Warren
USW District 6 Director
