Building a stronger future for Western Canada

Headshot photo of a bearded man in a suit and tie, smiling. It is an immense honour to have been elected as the new Director for District 3, representing the union’s members in Western Canada and the Territories.

For the last 25 years, I have proudly worked with our union as the Assistant to the Director and as a staff representative in various capacities. I have seen and heard from many activists and local union leaders during that time. I commit to listening and working with you as we build a stronger future.

It’s time to look forward, embrace new and fresh perspectives and bring our district together. I welcome the challenge and I’m excited to work with all local unions to deliver results for members and their families.

I look forward to meeting with staff and local union leaders to set targets for activities focused on what local unions need to help them better educate, service, bargain and communicate. Plans are underway for our annual summer school, training for local union officers, engagement of members to attend upcoming conferences and providing more training opportunities for members.

Existing programs such as Women of Steel, NextGen, Veterans of Steel, Steel Pride, the Aboriginal Working Group and other initiatives have helped to make our district more inclusive and diverse.

I look forward to expanding and adding programs to better understand, advocate and be more
responsive to the diverse needs across our district. This includes building on the National Anti-Racism Working Group and creating space for differently abled members.

I also look forward to keeping younger members engaged with new and innovative ideas to modernize our district and ensure it stays relevant to working people now and in the future.

We have a lot of work to do, and we must find common ground and build our collective strength together. Steelworkers are excited about the future of our union, and I am too.

In solidarity,

Scott Lunny
USW District 3 Director
