Genpak workers in Brampton, Ont., have ratified a new collective agreement that secures key benefits on multiple fronts and annual wage increases.
Members of USW Local 9042 approved the new deal by a vote of 100%, earlier this year.
The 54 members of Local 9042 work in the manufacturing sector producing food packaging materials.
Wage increases will progressively grow over the four-year contract: 2.75% in 2022, 3% in 2023, 3% in 2024 and 3.25% in 2025.
Other major gains include paid sick days, shift premiums, bereavement leave, major medical coverage and a doubling of the previous dental coverage amount of $1,000 to $2,000.
Through solidarity and determination, members were able to secure their best deal ever at Genpak. Their satisfaction was demonstrated by a unanimous vote.
"The committee worked very hard to get what they wanted," said Raj Basra, USW staff representative.
Genpak is building a new facility in Brampton to establish the location as the central hub for all of its Canadian operations. This made the employer especially focused on employee retention during a period when workers are seeking jobs with good wages and benefits.
“Genpak workers have made substantial gains, a clear demonstration of bargaining in better times,” said Myles Sullivan, USW District 6 Director.
