Becoming the new Director of USW District 6 in Ontario and Atlantic Canada is an honour and a responsibility I could never have imagined when I joined the Steelworkers more than a quartercentury ago after beginning a job at a mining company in northern Ontario. I pledge to work tirelessly every day to earn the trust you have placed in me as director of the largest district in our international union.
I am proud to announce that Kevon Stewart is my Assistant, and Anita Bryan is our new District Co-ordinator. Kevon and Anita will make our union stronger, while adding much-needed diversity in our top staff roles.
My commitment to you is to work together to strengthen and build on the USW’s incredible legacy of defending the rights of our members and all working people.
Together, we will continue to build power through collective bargaining and organizing, and by expanding our USW committees and initiatives aimed at achieving real progress in health and safety, political action, diversity, human rights, equity and women’s issues.
With an Ontario election this June, I encourage Steelworkers to get boots on the ground to help elect an NDP government that’s on the side of workers.
We must take advantage of “bargaining in better times.” You deserve to have your hard work during the pandemic recognized. Our union is engaging members so we can bargain strong agreements with good wages, pensions, benefits, contract language and improvements in working conditions.
Our union is ready to confront the challenges and opportunities ahead. I know this optimism is shared by our International President Tom Conway and our Canadian leadership.
Get involved in your union and in your communities, in political action. Together, we will build a better future for our members and workers everywhere.
In solidarity,
