USW Endorses Ken Georgetti for Re-election as CLC President

TORONTO - "When it comes to fighting for jobs and justice, not just in the workplace but everywhere, there's no one I'd rather have in our corner than Ken Georgetti," says Ken Neumann, United Steelworkers (USW) National Director. "Through his leadership and depth of experience, our movement is more organized and unified than ever before."

Ken Georgetti has a solid track record leading the labour movement in Canada, building the Canadian Labour Congress to the powerhouse that it is today, representing more than three million workers.

There is more to do. The Canadian labour movement is facing unprecedented attacks on workers and unions by the Stephen Harper federal Conservative government.

That's why the United Steelworkers, representing 225,000 members across Canada, are endorsing Ken Georgetti for re-election as CLC President, to continue the work he has done, together with us, to ensure our labour movement is strong, growing, relevant and active.

"I am pleased to support Ken Georgetti to lead the Canadian Labour Congress. Ken is a no-nonsense leader and I believe that is what we need today," says Stephen Hunt, USW District 3 Director (Western Canada). "The attack on working people is relentless and we are fighting back. We need to be united now more than ever. Please support Ken Georgetti for President."

"We need Ken Georgetti at the helm of the CLC so we can fight the federal Conservative government's attacks on workers and workers' rights," says Daniel Roy, USW District 5 Director (Quebec). "The CLC, under Georgetti, has stood up to Stephen Harper on the issues that matter: jobs, Employment Insurance reform, pensions and omnibus bills that erode workers' democratic rights."

"Ken Georgetti has brought affiliates together to carry out the largest public awareness campaign about the value of unions to our society," says Marty Warren, USW District 6 Director (Ontario and Atlantic Canada). "The Together FAIRNESS WORKS initiative makes our labour movement relevant to all workers, and Ken's leadership has brought in non-affiliates as well to be a part of it."

"Under Ken's leadership, the CLC is taking on Stephen Harper and the Conservatives with strength and solidarity," says Leo W. Gerard, USW International President. "I'm standing with Ken Georgetti because he's a tough fighter who stood with us all through the Steelworkers struggles against Vale in Sudbury, Port Colborne and Voisey's Bay."

Steelworkers want to work together and win together, with Ken Georgetti re-elected as President of the Canadian Labour Congress.
