Cambridge Steelworkers Ratify Deal with Tenneco Automotive

CAMBRIDGE, Ont. - United Steelworkers (USW) members employed at the Tenneco Automotive manufacturing plant in Cambridge have ratified a three-year collective agreement with the company.

The new contract, which runs until February 2018, was ratified Wednesday by members of USW Local 2894. The USW represents approximately 430 employees at the Tenneco plant who manufacture vehicle exhaust systems and emission control products.

"It was a difficult round of negotiations, but we were able to negotiate an agreement that provides wage and pension increases in each year of the contract, as well as improvements in benefits and contract language," said USW Local 2894 President Tony Koski.

"We can also be proud that we succeeded in defending and improving our defined-benefit pension plan," Koski added.

The union rebuffed the employer's proposal to create a two-tier pension system that would have excluded a new generation of workers from the security of a defined benefit pension, he said.

"I congratulate the leadership and members of Steelworkers Local 2894 for their commitment to defend jobs with decent wages and benefits and their determination to reach a fair and reasonable collective agreement," said USW Ontario Director Marty Warren.

"This is a significant achievement given today's labour relations environment in which workers must constantly struggle against attacks on their wages, pensions and benefits," Warren said.
