Steelworkers Call on Members to Witness Court Proceedings to Stop U.S. Steel Canada from Abandoning Workers, Pensioners and the Community

Please see udpated advisory, September 28, 10:00 p.m.

TORONTO – The United Steelworkers (USW) are asking union members, retirees and community supporters to join them tomorrow to hear and witness the Ontario Superior Court proceedings as USW tries to stop the outrageous moves by U.S. Steel Canada to abandon its responsibility to Canadian workers, pensioners and the City of Hamilton.

WHAT: Assembly to Witness Court Action Against U.S. Steel Canada’s Despicable Action

WHO: Workers and Retirees of U.S. Steel Canada

WHERE: Assemble Outside Ontario Superior Court House, 330 University Avenue, Toronto

WHEN: Tuesday, 29 September 2015 -- 11:30 a.m.

“U.S. Steel Canada must be stopped from destroying Canadian operations,” said Bill Ferguson, President of USW Local 8782 in Nanticoke.

Though U.S. Steel Canada is under court-supervised bankruptcy protection, parent company U.S. Steel has decided to move production of high-value steel – produced for the auto industry – out of plants in Hamilton and Nanticoke.

U.S. Steel plans to move the production to its American facilities, over the objections of Canadian workers, pensioners, community leaders and the court-appointed bankruptcy protection monitor.

“This move abandons thousands of retirees and their dependents who rely on their drug and health benefits after years of work in dangerous, hazardous conditions,”  said Gary Howe, President of USW Local 1005 in Hamilton.
