Daniel Roy Resigns as Steelworkers’ Quebec Director

RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP – An emotional Daniel Roy, the United Steelworkers’ Quebec Director, announced his resignation today to delegates assembled at the union’s 51st Quebec annual assembly.

“I have been a Métallo from the time I first began working as a welder in Sept-Îles, 39 years ago. The Métallos taught me everything I know, they gave me everything. I grew up within this organization, in this family,” said Roy, whose resignation will take effect Dec. 31.

“I feel a great sense of pride in the work accomplished, and I am happy to be leaving my union in such fine health,” Roy said.

“The Métallos are a large union that speaks with one voice. It is a strong organization, one that knows how and when to fight the battles that must be fought. Over the years, I have had the great privilege of being able to count on the support of a strong team of committed activists. Together, they will work to promote the growth and advancement of the largest private sector union in Quebec.”

Roy indicated he would like to see his Assistant, Alain Croteau, succeed him as Director, with Dominic Lemieux, currently the Steelworkers’ North Shore Coordinator, as the Director’s Assistant. When an officer resigns during his or her term of office, the United Steelworkers’ Constitution provides that the International President designate an Interim Director until the next elections by union members are held. The Steelworkers’ International Executive Board will meet at the beginning of December.

The United Steelworkers/Syndicat des Métallos is affiliated with the FTQ and is the largest private sector union in Quebec, representing over 60,000 workers in all sectors of the economy.
