Donations to USW Rail Workers Defence Fund Near $200,000

MONTREAL – United Steelworkers (USW) members and other supporters have donated nearly $200,000 to a legal defence fund to help two workers being prosecuted in connection with the Lac-Mégantic train disaster.

With a trial set to begin, the defence fund for the two workers, members of the USW, has reached $193,000. The funds were raised through contributions from local unions, Steelworkers members, and other unions and groups.

"We know that the Crown has assigned a team of prosecutors to the file. The case is likely to be very complex. It is deplorable to see that so much energy is being invested into accusations against ordinary workers who were simply doing their job. The federal government is not in the least concerned by this, nor is the company," said Steelworkers Quebec Director Daniel Roy.

The funds donated to date will probably not be enough to cover the entire cost of the workers' defence.

"It is still possible to support these two workers to ensure they have access to a full and complete defence. All of the funds collected in the justice fund created for the USW rail workers will be dedicated to them," said Roy.

Donations may be made online, via PayPal, at www.justice4uswrailworkers.org, or by cheque made payable to Syndicat des Métallos, including the notation "Justice for USW Rail Workers," sent to 565 Crémazie Boulevard East, Suite 5100, Montréal, H2M 2V8.
