TWU-USW Members Ratify Collective Agreement with Shaw Cable

BURNABY, B.C. – The Telecommunications Workers Union, USW National Local 1944, congratulates its members for reaching a new collective agreement with Shaw Cable.

“I am proud of our bargaining committee members who worked extremely hard and were committed to a respectful and transparent process. They were effective in achieving a collective agreement that benefits the members and is reflective of their priorities,” said Tamara Marshall, Local Union Representative for Unit 60 of TWU-USW Local 1944, which represents over 500 members across the Lower Mainland.

After six months of bargaining, the union’s bargaining committee brought forward a tentative collective agreement to Unit 60 members. The union’s Shaw Vancouver members voted 77.6% and the Shaw Surrey members voted 76.7% in favour of ratifying the three-year agreement, which takes effect retroactively from March 24, 2015.

The new contract includes 100% paid sick days; annual salary increases of 1.75%, increases to long- and short-term disability insurance; security around scheduling for technical field representatives; a new third-party Internet account code; and a $20 portal code.

This was the first round of bargaining for TWU members since they merged with the United Steelworkers, which provided new methods and expertise on bargaining practices. The Unit 60 bargaining committee was effective in engaging members and membership participation in the process was very high.

“We are very pleased by the high level of engagement and participation from our Unit 60 members and we congratulate them on their new collective agreement,” said TWU-USW National Local 1944 President Lee Riggs.
