April 28th, National Day of Mourning

As Steelworkers, April 28th is the most solemn day in our calendar.

It is the day we remember the men and women who have sacrificed their lives – not for wars in foreign lands – but for the sake of a job – to feed their families and keep a roof over their heads.

Brothers and Sisters, legislation and regulation isn’t enough. Compensation is almost never enough. Only our vigilance and our willingness to challenge employers and governments will change the future of workplace health and safety.

Of course, as trade unionists we have always known this.

As long as governments and corporations attempt to minimize our rights and maximize profits, our movement will survive because our struggle continues.

We must fight – for the living, for the injured, for the sick, and for our families every day, and in every way.

Solidarity Forever.
