Steelworkers Humanity Fund Contributes $33,000 to Quebec Organizations Helping Those in Need

MONTREAL – This year, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is contributing $33,000 to food banks and community organizations helping those in need throughout Quebec. These contributions are funded from the union dues the members of the United Steelworkers (USW) contribute each week to help support those living in difficult situations, in Quebec and around the world.

“We are lucky to have a job and to be able to support our families. But we also know, having seen it too often, that what we have may not last. We are well aware that when you’re going through a difficult situation, solidarity makes all the difference,” said United Steelworkers’ Quebec Director, Alain Croteau, when announcing the donations made to 11 organizations.

The following organizations will receive donations: Carrefour d’alimentation et de partage Saint-Barnabé, La cuisine collective Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Les Œuvres de la Maison du Père, Le Bon Dieu dans la rue, Le Centre  d’action bénévole de la MRC de Coaticook, Moisson d’Alma, L’Entraide Bécancour, Le Service alimentaire communautaire de Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, L’espoir  de Shelna d’Havre‑Saint-Pierre, Le Centre d’intervention le Rond Point de Sept-Îles and La Maison de la famille de Port-Cartier.

“We care deeply about the quality of life of the people in our region. To be involved in trade unionism is to work hard every day to improve the daily lives of those in need around us. When we have the opportunity to help people we know are facing difficult situations, we make it our duty to do so,” said Pierre Arseneau, USW Montreal Area Coordinator.

The United Steelworkers, which is affiliated with the Féderation des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec (FTQ), is the largest private sector union in Quebec, representing more than 60,000 workers in all economic sectors.
