Steelworkers Hail Successful NDP Gender Equality Motion

TORONTO – United Steelworkers’ (USW) National Director Ken Neumann praised Tuesday’s House of Commons vote on an NDP motion to end income inequality and gender discrimination as a victory for women workers in all sectors of the economy.

“Our union has been fighting for pay equity for decades in both so-called traditional and non-traditional workplaces,” Neumann said. “Our 50,000 female Steelworkers look to our union to promote pay equity, but more needs to be done to end the systemic discrimination.”

Neumann added that the USW will monitor to make sure the government follows up on the intent of the motion, which calls for implementation of the 2004 Pay Equity Task Force recommendations as well as a special committee that will conduct hearings.

“We join with the NDP in calling for federal leadership on pay equity to fill the gender-equality gap that persists for many reasons but is all-too clear when wages are compared. We look forward to contributing to the discussion and the solution.”

USW recently made a detailed submission to the Gender Gap Strategy Steering Committee in Ontario calling for urgent action.
