USW Extends Condolences to Family of Two Members Lost to Workplace Deaths

Burnaby, B.C. – The United Steelworkers is extending its deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of two members who recently died while at work.

A member of USW Local 2009 who worked at Hains Celestial, a food processing plant in Delta died on May 2, 2016.

This was tragically followed by the death of a member of USW Local 9704 who worked at Russel Metals in Winnipeg.

There are ongoing investigations into both deaths and the USW is fully involved in both investigations and in providing support to families and co-workers of the deceased.

USW District 3 Director Stephen Hunt says the deaths of these members coming so shortly after the Day of Mourning for workers killed or injured on the job is especially difficult.

“In every USW workplace, it’s critical that health and safety is our top concern. We need to ensure there are strong health and safety committees, robust safety policies and procedures and that where necessary, we exercise our legal right to refuse unsafe work,” says Hunt.
