Labour Day Message from USW District 3 Director Stephen Hunt

Labour Day is always a good time to reflect on all the achievements we have made together over the past year for our members and for working people.

It’s no coincidence that when we gather to celebrate Labour Day it’s not at an exclusive club or upscale restaurant, it’s in the local community and it’s an event for everyone.

That’s what being part of a union is all about. We are a family that looks out for another and fights together to build better communities and better lives for all.

Across the District, our locals are deeply involved in community and charitable work. From supporting local food banks and kid sports teams to volunteering with the United Way and many other local groups, Steelworkers don’t just talk the talk. I’m so proud of the work each of you do to build our communities. And as you do it, you are also building our union.

I’m particularly moved by the tremendous response of Steelworkers to the wildfires that have ravaged through the Interior of British Columbian where many of our members live and work. Our locals there, with support from other locals across the district, have been on the front lines supporting all of those who’ve been affected. And they aren’t going anywhere. I know they will be there every step of the way to help rebuild.

Thank you for all that you do every day to make our union strong. Be proud of your work and your accomplishments from the bargaining table to the broader community. Enjoy this time with family, friends and other workers.

Our work continues.
