Labour Day Message from Ken Neumann: How Unions Work to End Racism

Labour Day is a time to come together and celebrate our achievements, our friendships and our solidarity.

Labour Day marks the end of summer and return to school; it also marks the ramp-up of labour’s activities that may have slowed down over the summer.

In 2017, let’s make sure Labour Day is also about how unions work to end racism.

USW renewed our commitment to stand up against racism following the deadly attack by a white supremacist in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“A fundamental tenet of the labour movement is that an injustice to one is an injustice to all. Based on that principle, the USW condemns racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, and anti-LGBTQ and anti-Muslim bigotry, but even more importantly, the USW denounces hate-motivated violence.”

We are experiencing an increase in incidents of racism and hatred in Canada, as in the United States. We must not feel helpless or overwhelmed. We must take action to stand against hate and racism – and do so together.

Canada’s unions have a proud history of countering racism, within our workplaces and within our communities.

Within our locals and our workplaces, through our USW education programs, by attending rallies and events, showing solidarity with other groups standing up against hate, Steelworkers are working to end racism every day.

We must continue to stand up and speak out. When we do, others join us, and our voices are louder and stronger.

We know we are stronger when we stand together. Labour Day is a celebration of that solidarity.

Please join your union family on Labour Day to celebrate our friendships of strength and solidarity, our shared commitment for social justice for all and our continued efforts to end racism across our country.

In solidarity,

Ken Neumann
USW National Director
