USW Applauds Alberta Premier Rachel Notley's NDP Government for Commitment to Fix Workers' Compensation Board

The United Steelworkers is applauding Premier Rachel Notley and her government for creating an opportunity to fix the broken workers' compensation system in Alberta.

“For too long, the Alberta WCB has been focused on denying legitimate claims instead of fufilling its original mandate of supporting injured workers,” says USW District 3 Director Stephen Hunt.

Hunt says the release of the final report and recommendations of the Alberta Workers Compensation Board Review Panel means that injured workers and their families have an opportunity to be placed back at the centre of the WCB’s purpose.

“Workers and their families need to know that if they were to suffer an injury at work the WCB will be there to support and assist them during that difficult time. It’s the right the thing to do and part of building modern, family-friendly workplaces,” says Hunt.

The United Steelworkers represents 8,000 workers in Alberta and will be reviewing the panel’s recommendations carefully while providing further input to the Government of Alberta.
