Steelworkers Humanity Fund Contributes to Flood Relief in Quebec and Ontario

The Steelworkers Humanity Fund (SHF) is contributing to relief efforts to assist residents in Quebec and eastern Ontario affected by severe flooding this spring.

The SHF has contributed $37,000 to the Red Cross in Quebec, where record flooding has devastated residents in several communities.

“Many people, including our members, have been hard hit by the historic flooding this spring and we want to demonstrate our solidarity with all the residents of Quebec who have been affected,” said Alain Croteau, Quebec Director of the United Steelworkers (USW) and a director of the SHF.

“I am encouraging our local unions and our members to contribute to the Red Cross and to volunteer their time to relief efforts in their communities,” Croteau said.

Information on the need for volunteers for flood relief in Quebec is available on the Red Cross website.

The Steelworkers Humanity Fund also is contributing $5,000 to a community-based charity to assist with flood relief in the eastern Ontario communities of L’Orignal and Hawkesbury.

"Flooding has caused real hardship to families and communities and the Steelworkers Humanity Fund wants to assist in the recovery efforts," said Ken Neumann, Steelworkers Humanity Fund President.

Founded in 1985, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered charitable organization that focuses on development projects and emergency aid in developing countries, but also supports Canadian communities in crisis. United Steelworkers members contribute to the fund through clauses negotiated into collective agreements. In some cases employers make matching contributions.
