Marty Warren's Statement for Transgender Day of Remembrance

International Transgender Day of Remembrance has been observed annually on November 20 as a day to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia. It is a day to draw attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community. Since 1999, Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), takes place every November. It is a day on which those trans and gender-diverse people who have been victims of homicide are remembered. Started in the U.S., TDoR is now held in many parts of the world.

This year, south of the border, hate crimes have reached a 27-year high. The United States saw the murders of 22 trans women of colour this year and a total of 331 cases of reported killings of trans and gender-diverse people between October 1, 2018, and September 30, 2019, worldwide.

USW continues to fight for our trans siblings here in Canada and abroad. This year, as an international union, we have fought for the passing of the Equality Act. Here in District 6, we have appointed our first Trans Liaison to assist in trans education and workplace transitions. We developed a USW workplace transition guide with the D6 Human Rights Committee to help our members and staff. We have made great strides, but there is still a lot of work to do. The United Steelworkers continue to fight for fairness and equality for all of our trans and gender diverse members. As our founding principles of 1942 state: To unite in one organization, regardless of creed, colour or nationality, ALL workmen and working women eligible for membership.

All means all.

In solidarity,

Marty Warren
Director, District 6
