Marty Warren Statement for October 4, the National Day to Commemorate Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

Today, we mourn the loss of Indigenous women and girls, especially members of our Steelworker family and their loved ones.

This has been an important year for Indigenous women as the final report from the National Inquiry was released.  The Inquiry found that “persistent and deliberate human and Indigenous rights, violations and abuses are the root cause behind Canada’s staggering rates of violence against Indigenous women and girls” and declared that this amounted to a genocide.

We need to come together as a union and a nation to be a part of the significant change and work that needs to be done to move towards the decolonization of Canada that the report called for.  We need to hold our elected government officials accountable for making concrete changes in the areas of health, security, justice and culture and to continue to let the stories of the families who testified during the Inquiry guide us in making this important transition.

In solidarity,

Marty Warren
Director, District 6
