Marty Warren's Statement for International Women's Day 2019

On March 8th we celebrate International Women’s Day. It’s a day to remember our accomplishments, where we were and what struggles we continue to have. As your district director, I will continue to fight for inclusion, diversity, equal pay, and safety for all.

Our women’s committees have stood strong in fighting the challenges to make changes within the labour movement. I ask the brothers within our district to stand side by side with their sisters as they continue to pave the way for our next generation of activists. I am proud of all our sisters for stepping up within our union and the broader community.

As your director, I encourage new members within our union to get involved and have your voices heard. Make a difference by:

  • Attending local meetings
  • Attending Steelworkers education workshops
  • Joining Women of Steel committees within your local
  • Joining the New Democratic Party to support their fight for women’s equality
  • Getting involved within the District 6 Mentoring Program

Within our district, our membership is made up of 40+ % women. We have women working within many sectors, including mining, steel, security, health care, education and more. We join with women around the globe to celebrate International Women’s Day. We must all remember: Education is Knowledge and Knowledge is Power!

In solidarity,

Marty Warren
Director, District 6
